More than a vision screening
A screening can identify some vision problems, but reading an eye chart does not replace an eye exam. A comprehensive exam considers both how well you see and the health of your eyes. You can still benefit from an exam even if your vision seems clear.
What happens during an eye exam?
Your optometrist will ask about your vision, symptoms, health history and medications. Depending on your needs, the visit may include a prescription check, an assessment of how your eyes work together, and an examination of the front and back of your eyes. The doctor may recommend additional tests or dilation to see the inside of your eyes more clearly. Ask the office before your visit if you have questions about dilation or driving afterward.
When should I book?
Book an exam if you notice a change in your vision, have persistent eye discomfort, need an updated prescription, or have been advised to monitor an eye condition. The appropriate interval between routine visits depends on your age, health and eye history; your optometrist can recommend one for you. Sudden vision loss or a serious eye injury needs prompt medical attention rather than a routine appointment.
How to prepare
