Syntonics or optometric photolight therapy is a non-invasive treatment designed to equilibrate (or balance out) the autonomic system. It is a safe treatment having been around for over 90 years. It utilizes certain visible light frequencies/colors to help enhance visual attention and what we see. Syntonic has been shown to treat the following conditions:
Unstable vision
Eyestrain/fatigue
Strabismus
Amblyopia
Double vision
Poor depth perception
Glare
POOR PERIPHERAL VISION/AWARENESS
Other related conditions include:
Headache
Short attention span
Poor coordination/balance
History of Stress and/or trauma including:
Traumatic Brain Injury
Mental and or emotion stress
Chronic illness (i.e. lyme disease)
The goal of syntonic is to balance the Autonomic Nervous System. Many individuals suffer from imbalance autonomic nervous system due to various reasons. Patients with imbalance ANS frequently suffer from symptoms that are unexplainable and frequent testing results in normal findings. (I.e. Gastrointestinal issues without any cause or hearing impairments although whenever they test their auditory system there is no issue). Many of these symptoms occur due to overprocessing and mix signals being sent. Syntonic serves to stabilize the ANS and as a result may help normalize these symptoms.
Patients that have suffered traumatic brain injury (TBI) and/or concussion and have conditions such as esotropia and/or esophoria may be expected to go through syntonic prior or in conjunction with vision therapy. In fact, some patients may ONLY need syntonic for visual relief and may not need vision therapy. This is all based on individual cases.
Syntonic therapy generally consists of sessions ranging from 5-20 minutes. Certain patients may only be able to tolerate small duration with the light due to the systemic system not allowing for it. Conditions may feel worse during the first three -four treatments as we are trying to make changes that affect the brain ability to process. Think of syntonic as a way of detoxifying as it works on the retinal-hypothalamic system.
